Chamomile Roman hydrolat is calming and restful

Chamaemelum nobile (formerly known as Anthemis nobile) is a small, stocky, perennial herb that grows to about 20-30cm high. It has daisy-like white flowers with yellow centres and feathery leaves. The essential oil is distilled from the flower heads, and the resulting hydrolat from the distillation process can refresh the skin.

The main components of chamomile hydrolats that have been analysed show the following components present; 5-33% esters and 11-23% alcohols. This suggests that the hydrolat should make a general tonic for the whole body.

In skin care, Chamomile Roman is a strong anti-inflammatory. It makes a wonderful toner and is helpful for oily or acne prone skin. Suzanne Catty recommends it as a make-up remover. It eases the sting of insect bites and sunburn. It is also can help ease muscular aches and arthritic conditions.

Emotionally, it is a nervine and possesses sedative properties. It calm the nerves and is the ideal hydrosol for inclusion in formulations for depression, stress, anxiety and insomnia. It makes an excellent room mist and linen spray for providing calming and relaxation during stressful days and at bedtime.

It is calming and is both safe and recommended for use in baby care and childcare formulations. Its remarkable calming properties makes it a wonderful addition to sprays for baby’s room, baby’s bathwater and for use to wipe after diaper changes. It is a strong anti-inflammatory and can be used as a soothing wetting agent for natural baby wipes. It can also be blended with one of our lavender hydrosols for a synergistic anti-inflammatory and calming blend. Suzanne Catty mentions that dabbing the hydrosol on the gums of a teething baby can providing soothing relief. Suzanne Catty also recommends its use in calming pets.

Hydrolats are the aromatic waters produced by the steam distillation of botanical material, usually during the production of essential oils.  Hydro means water and lat comes from the word for milk, because when fresh these waters can be cloudy or milky from the suspended soluble plant extracts.

Hydrolats are gentle and effective.  They contain only the most water-soluble chemicals from the plant material plus microscopic drops of the essential oils.  They may be used undiluted without problems but it is usually unnecessary as they are just as effective in dilution – less can be more!  Generally calming and soothing.
